Rey Mysterio wasn’t present for WWE Royal Rumble Due to Injury
According to a recent source, Rey Mysterio‘s injury prevented him from competing in the men’s Royal Rumble battle last night.
It was widely indicated that Dominik or the entire Judgment Day had attacked Rey backstage to prevent him from participating when Mysterio did not show up for his place in the opening match of the PPV while Dominik did.
His ring name is a tribute to his uncle
Rey Mysterio is the ring name of skilled American professional wrestler Oscar Gutiérrez (formerly Rey Mysterio Jr.). In 2002, Mysterio made his WWE debut. He is most recognized for his daring, distinctive Lucha Libre fighting technique. His uncle Rey Misterio Sr., a well-known wrestler from the 1970s, trained him before his debut at the age of fourteen. Despite only standing at 5 feet 6 inches tall, he persisted in his goals. In keeping with Lucha legend, Rey Mysterio gave his ring the name of his uncle and wore a mask.
Instead of replacing him, WWE went with a subtle tease involving Dominik and Rey. If Rey had been able to participate in the Rumble, that tease was supposed to be much bigger.
What was about to happen earlier?
The plan was to set up a possible match between Rey and Dominik at WrestleMania 39. This appears to be the plan, that’s why, one entry later, Dom appeared with Rey’s mask and attempted to tear it up on his way to the ring.
Dominik was said to have attacked his father backstage, taken the mask, and rendered Rey unable to compete. Dominik and Rey have been feuding for months, but WWE moved Rey to SmackDown so that the company could postpone plans for a match between these two.
The feeling was that it would be difficult to drag that storyline out and not deliver the match sooner, so Rey’s strategy was to prolong things by filming and sharing incidents on social media, such as when Dom raided Rey’s house over the holidays.
