On October 30, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic met football great David Beckham at the 2023 Ballon d’Or presentation in Paris.

Lionel Messi won his record seventh Ballon d’Or award during the ceremony, which was co-hosted by FIFA and France Football, beating out Manchester City player Erling Haaland and former Paris Saint-Germain colleague Kylian Mbappe. Messi’s performances in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when he led Argentina to victory, boosted his prospects.

Meanwhile, Aitana Bonmati got the women’s award for her part in helping Spain to World Cup triumph in August 2023. Last season, the 25-year-old midfielder also helped her team, Barcelona, win Liga F and the Champions League.

Novak Djokovic, who is now in Paris preparing to compete in the upcoming Paris Masters, attended the event. He even gave Bonmati the women’s prize.

During the ceremony, the Serb experienced a pleasant moment with English football legend David Beckham. The two were spotted conversing while smiling, and they subsequently snapped a selfie together. In that regard, it’s worth noting that Beckham has previously attended matches of the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

“It’s a great privilege” for Novak Djokovic to attend the Ballon d’Or 2023.

Novak Djokovic told reporters at the Ballon d’Or 2023 that he was ‘thrilled’ to be attending such an important event. He spoke of his early passion for football, both playing and watching, and how much he was enjoying the experience.

“It’s nice to use the opportunity when I have the tournament in the city where you have some big sporting events like World Cup finals of rugby and, of course, Ballon d’Or,” he said. “I’ve never attended either the Rugby World Cup final, [or] Ballon d’Or, so I’m really enjoying myself.” (Tennis.com quotes)

“I grew up watching football, playing football, my father was a professional for some time, so I’m really excited to be here,” he said.
The 36-year-old then made a joke about preferring tennis over football, saying:

“It’s a great privilege, surrounded by the best players in the world, in the greatest spot in the world,” he told reporters. “The sport I grew up with, which I played every day… I was maybe 9 or 10 years old when I decided whether to play football or tennis, and I selected tennis. I’m not sure if that was a good decision, but I believe it was.”

On November 1, Djokovic will face either Miomir Kecmanovic or Tomas Etcheverry in the second round of the Paris Masters. The number one seed receives a first-round bye.
