The Indian President Droupadi Murmu, in using the powers “conferred by clause (3) of article 77 of the Constitution” amended the regulations surrounding Esports and asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Sports Ministry to include “e-Sports as part of multi-sports events”.

After it was introduced as a physical event in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, medals earned in the sport were not recorded in the official media overall medals tally, and there was a rising desire for Gaming to be incorporated into the curricula of multi-discipline events.

The recognition of esports as a legitimate form of competitive gaming by governments is a growing trend in the industry. This recognition has come with a number of benefits for both players and the industry as a whole.

Pros:

  • Increased investment: With official recognition from governments, esports organizations are more likely to receive investment from sponsors and investors, allowing for the growth and development of the industry.
  • Better player treatment: Esports players are often seen as professional athletes and are entitled to benefits such as visas, health insurance, and pension plans.
  • Improved infrastructure: Government recognition of esports can lead to the development of dedicated esports facilities and the creation of regulations that ensure fair play and prevent cheating.
  • Boost to the economy: The growth of esports can have a positive impact on local economies, creating jobs and attracting tourists to events.

Cons:

  • Regulations: While regulations can help ensure fair play, they can also be restrictive and limit creativity in game development and play.
  • Lack of universal recognition: Not all governments have officially recognized esports, leading to inconsistencies in treatment and opportunities for players and organizations.

The official recognition of esports by governments is a positive step for the industry. It provides players with better treatment and opportunities and can lead to increased investment and growth. However, there may also be some negative consequences, such as restrictive regulations, that need to be considered and addressed.
