The race for the 2024 U.S. Senate seat in California, previously occupied by the late Diane Feinstein and currently held by Laphonza Butler, is heating up. A well-known face from the world of baseball is stepping into the political arena.

Steve Garvey, a former Dodgers pitcher with 10 All-Star appearances and a World Series championship under his belt, officially announced his run for the U.S. Senate in California as a Republican.

Garvey emphasized the importance of unity in his campaign kickoff, saying, “In baseball, it’s not about the individual; it’s about the team. I believe the same holds true for politics. It’s time we come together, find common ground, and work towards a brighter future.”

Reflecting on his life journey, Garvey shared, “Over 50 years ago, I came to California for the first time… September 1st of 1969, the Dodgers called me up and my dreams came true… Over the next 20 years, I played for the Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. I played in front of millions of fans. I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents. I played for all of you. Now I’m running for the U.S. Senate in California. A state that I believe at one time was the heartbeat of America. And now it’s just a murmur.”

However, Garvey faces a tough road ahead. He must first secure the Republican nomination, and he’s up against nine other Republican candidates, some of whom have prior political experience. Additionally, two more Republicans have filed paperwork but not officially declared their candidacy.

On the Democratic side, while Laphonza Butler has not declared her candidacy yet, 13 other Democratic hopefuls, including three sitting U.S. Congress members, are already in the race.

To win, Garvey needs a strong political team, akin to the 1981 Dodgers’ legendary teamwork. Winning this title requires a well-coordinated effort, much like the teamwork that defined his successful baseball career.
