Steve Smith’s Puzzling LBW Decision Stirs Controversy at Cricket World Cup 2023
Steve Smith was left completely stunned during the Cricket World Cup 2023 match between Australia and South Africa in Lucknow. The surprise came after a review (known as DRS) showed a rare LBW dismissal. A delivery from Kagiso Rabada hit Smith’s leg as he moved in front of the stumps. Initially, it seemed like the ball missed the leg stump. However, South Africa decided to review, and the replay revealed that the ball was indeed hitting the stumps.
The decision brought some confusion as the ball tracker only displayed the final result, not the ball’s journey. Smith was visibly unhappy with the process, and even the on-field umpire, Joel Wilson, appeared surprised when the third umpire overturned his initial not-out decision.
In the same match, Quinton de Kock scored his second consecutive century at the Cricket World Cup, contributing to South Africa’s victory over Australia. South Africa posted 311-7, and Australia, facing a challenging chase, lost six wickets with just 70 runs on the board. Their focus then shifted to limiting the damage to their net run-rate.
Australia was eventually dismissed for 177, leaving them with a second consecutive loss in the tournament. South Africa celebrated their second victory in as many games.
South Africa’s captain, Temba Bavuma, expressed satisfaction with their performance, while Pat Cummins, the captain of the Australian team, admitted that his team had not performed up to the mark. Australia had also missed several catching opportunities when South Africa batted.
