Renowned Cricket Coach M R Baig of Hyderabad Passes Away

Cricket fans in Hyderabad are feeling very sad today because a beloved and highly respected cricket coach, Mirza Rahmatullah Baig, passed away last night.

People affectionately called him Baig saab. He was like a father and a mentor to many cricketers in Hyderabad and India. His friendly smile and kind manners touched the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Over the years, Baig coached some of India’s most famous players, such as Kapil Dev, Md. Azharuddin, V V S Laxman, Venkatapathy Raju, Rahul Dravid, Sanjay Manjrekar, and many others. Baig believed in traditional cricket values. He used to say to his students, “Work hard, be disciplined, and develop your talents to the fullest.”

It’s a mystery why the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) didn’t make better use of his skills. Perhaps it was because he didn’t play politics and stuck to his principles.

People from all over the world sent their condolences. A former Hyderabad cricketer from Australia, Noel Bernard Carr, expressed his sadness and praised Baig’s dedication and simplicity. Jayanthi Jaisimha, the wife of former Test cricketer M L Jaisimha, called Baig a national treasure and acknowledged his immense knowledge of cricket.

Baig was born on January 21, 1940. He played cricket at school and represented Hyderabad and South Zone schools. Later, he played first-class cricket for more than ten years before becoming a coach. He completed his coaching education from the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, worked as a BCCI coach for six years, coached in the Maldives for four years, and served in various sports organizations, including the Sports Authority of India, Indian Navy, and AP Sports Council. He also coached young players from schools, colleges, and universities for many years. His influence on cricket was immeasurable. His absence will be deeply felt by everyone in the cricket community.
