IPL Auction 2022: Rules for retention in IPL 2022 Auction

Now that IPL 2022 is going to be a 10-team affair the reselection and auction of the franchises are going to take place soon.

A special rule that has been provided to the franchises is “retention”. In this, every franchise can retain a maximum of four players in the mega auction from the current teams. On the other hand, the 2 new teams-Ahmedabad and Lucknow can go for up to 3 retentions from the remaining players before the auction takes place.

According to the BCCI, the franchise can retain its 4 players in a certain combination: three Indians and one overseas, or two Indians and two overseas.

The retentions are still not confirmed in the case of the new teams but the suitcase for IPL will be full with 90 crore INR this year. A 5 crore sum has been added to 85 crores (in the last auction). Also, there is no right-to-match (RTM) card available for the franchises that were there in the last auction.

It also depends on the player if he wants to be retained or wants to put himself into the auctions. The player is completely free to go for his wish.

According to ESPNcricinfo, there are still some official announcements to be made:

“While the IPL is yet to announce the details and rules, the deadline for retaining players is likely to be the end of November. Some of the key elements that the IPL is still to firm up include the maximum amount that can be spent on each retained player and the percentage of the auction purse each franchise can spend overall on retaining players,”

The official IPL 2022 auction is expected to be in January or February.
