IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals announces their New Captain, Shreyas Iyer is ruled out

Delhi capital has finally revealed the name of the new captain after Shreyas Iyer who got injured during the first ODI between India and England, underwent the shoulder surgery and was ruled out of the whole IPL season.

Delhi capital named the Rishab pant as its new captain in the absence of Shreyas Iyer. Rishab pant has no prior experience of captaincy in Delhi capitals but he has captained the Delhi state cricket team in the past.

Pant, had a remarkable season with the Virat Kohli-led Team India side on the international front. It will be a great opportunity for Pant to prove his mettle as a captain in the Delhi capitals.

“Rishabh Pant will be our Captain for IPL2021. Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming season following his injury in the IND ENG series and RishabhPant will lead the team in his absence,” Delhi Capitals said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Barring the Pant, there were other cricketing stalwarts Shikhar Dhawan, Steven Smith and Ravichandran ashwin who were other potential candidates for this role. But, Delhi capitals set his eyes on Rishabh pant.

Rishab pant was very excited about this new opportunity and considered it as a special moment for him. He said:

“Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I’ve always harboured. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can’t wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals.”

Shreyas Iyer who was brilliant last season as a captain and he helped the DC to reach the final, he was all praises for Rishabh pant. Shreyas iyer said:

“When I sustained the shoulder injury, and Delhi Capitals needed a leader for this edition of the IPL, I had no doubt that Rishabh would be the best man for the job. He has all my good wishes to make amazing things happen with our absolutely incredible team,”

Delhi head coach Ricky Ponting termed it a stupendous moment for Rishabh Pant while heaping praises on injured Shreyas iyer. He said:

“The previous two seasons under Shreyas’ leadership have been incredible, and the results speak for themselves. This is a tremendous opportunity for young Rishabh, who is coming off successful stints against Australia and England which will no doubt give him the confidence needed to take on a new role that comes with a lot more responsibility. The coaching group is excited to work with him, and we can’t wait for the season to get started.”

Rishab pant has so far played a total of 68 matches where he has garnered 2079 runs at the strike rate of 151.97, averaging 35.3 since his inclusion in 2016 in the IPL.

Delhi capitals will begin their campaign of this season against the Chennai super kings on April 10. He along with Shikhar dhawan, Steven smith, Ashwin, Rabada will definitely look to take the team to the IPL trophy.
