Ind vs Eng 2nd T20: Can there still be a second opinion to play Surya kumar in the place of Shreyas at no 4?

When T20 between India and England was to start, there were many opinions surfacing on the internet to include Suryakumar in the playing 11 at the cost of Shreyas iyer. When Kohli made it clear that he won’t be the part of playing for the first T20. There was outrage on the internet for not giving him any opportunity to play. As they were all waiting to see him playing finally in international cricket. Some of the Surya fans went on to the extent of making allegations on Virat Kohli for taking revenge on him. 

Finally, the first T20 concluded and the way Shreyas Iyer was the lone warrior of the India batting side. All the opinions against Shreyas Iyer were buried under the carpet. 

Shreyas Iyer had a knock of 67 runs off 48 balls. He was only the player of all the batsmen to have scored the maximum runs in single innings when all other batsmen were getting out one after another.  Because of Shreyas Iyer, India managed to score a face-saving target of 124 runs. 

Now, people are claiming to persist with Shreyas Iyer for the rest of T20. Sanjay bangar, former Indian batting coach said that there should not be any question mark over Shreyas iyer’s place in the Indian T20 team and added he should be given a consistent run. 

“He batted in a brilliant fashion and it was under pressure. He was also sent down the order because Rishabh Pant was promoted. He is a very consistent player and there should not be any pressure on him for his place in the team because he is a player who can play responsibly and can play the big shots,” said Bangar.

He further added that

“If you have seen since 2019, if a player has been given chances at No.4 or No.5, it is Shreyas Iyer. Yes, he had a slightly below-par series in Australia but if you play so many matches, two or three failures can happen. I feel this player should continue playing all the T20 matches till the World Cup because the more confidence you give him, the better he will keep getting,” added Bangar.

Undoubtedly, surya kumar is a good player, he has proved his mettle in both IPL and domestic cricket. He has not got any opportunity to play in International cricket. This was the first time he made his debut in International cricket. But unless any player from the already existing playing 11 is unable to play, it is unlikely that he will be able to showcase his skills. 

Till then, they are going to continue with the Shreyas iyer. Shreyas Iyer has scored 496 runs at an average of 29.14 and his strike rate was 131.91 in the T20.  His knock was the highest in the 25 T20 he has played so far.  Shreyas Iyer is also the captain of Delhi capitals.
