Former Linebacker returns to Ohio State

Ohio State has welcomed former legendary linebacker James Laurinaitis into the coaching department. The program announced that James will be returning as a graduate assistant.

It was last year when James switched his career to Radio hosting and commentating to try coaching. He was formerly employed as GA for Notre Dame along with his former Ohio State teammate Marcus Freeman. Now in 2023, he is set to offer his services at his alma mater.

Laurinaitis has been one of the finest linebackers to come out of Ohio State.

Laurinaitis’ Background

During his career, Laurinaitis made 869 tackles, 16.5 sacks, 10 interceptions, and a couple of forced fumbles. During 2005-08, James was named an All-American thrice and won the Big Ten defensive player of the year award twice. Apart from that, he has won accolades such as the Jack Lambert Trophy twice, the Butkus Award, and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as college football’s best defensive outlet.

He played for St. Louis Rams for over six years before hanging up his boots in 2016 and saying goodbye to New Orleans Saints. Back in 2009, he was a second-round pick of the St. Louis Rams.

Now, James’s mission will be to produce new talent and nurture them into becoming the next greats of the game. He will now be working with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to train the Buckeye linebackers.

What did Ryan Day have to say?

Ryan day released a statement saying, “I am thrilled for our program and especially for our current and future Buckeyes, who will benefit so much from having James on staff. James is a terrific young man with wisdom as a Buckeye and experience as an eight-year NFL veteran. He is going to be a very important part of our program going forward.”
